British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
