EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
