The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
